Kevin Donohue is undergoing surgery this morning to remove a blood clot from his back, which is apparently the cause of the tremendous back pain that has kept him home bound for the last few weeks.

Also, my sister is in surgery at this moment to have a "mass" removed from her lung. They won't determine whether it is cancerous or not until it is biopsied after the surgery, but this is never good. As a former smoker, I ask all you smokers out there to please take note. It really hits home when this happens to someone you love.

Please keep these two in your prayers this morning as you go about your day.

Fr. Tom O'Donnell Named National AOH Chaplain

Brothers, The following note is from AOH National President Seamus Boyle:

Brothers,

As of July 1, 2009, we have a new national chaplain.

Father Thomas M. O'Donnell will be our national chaplain effective immediately.

About five weeks ago, Father Patrick Sullivan informed me that he had been asked to serve as the the executive secretary of the Labor Guild and chaplain for the Archdiocese of Boston. He will be stationed in Weymouth MA but will be housed at Stonehill.

Father Sullivan and I had a very close relationship for the past number of years, and I am sad to see him leave as our chaplain, but as he explained to me, besides these duties he will also have to train a younger priest to eventually take over his job as the years progress.

Knowing him as I do, and and most of you know already that he is a person who will not do a job he cannot dedicate his time and talent to full time. Father Sullivan said he could not dedicate the time needed to perform the position of national chaplain, and he would have to resign.

He is not going too far and will be around the conventions and meetings when he can. Father did a great job as chaplain. He will be missed sorely. Thank you,Father.

Father Sullivan is very familiar with Father Tom O'Donnell and was delighted when Father Tom accepted the appointment. Father Tom is presently the Allegheny County and the Pennsylvania state chaplain and is very familiar with the AOH and has been a member for many years.

He is an expert on Canon Law and is a judge on the Marriage Tribunal. I am delighted to have Father Tom on board. He will have his first job attending the meeting in Albany next week with the LAOH. I ask that you all give him your total support. He will be available to each of you at any time. During the next year you will see a lot of Father Tom as he is a hands-on kind of priest and travels around the country so you will not be surprised when you see him.

As you know, Sept. 17, 2009, marks the 20th Anniversary of Sean MacBride Division #32 receiving its charter.

Our Division plans to celebrate this special occasion with a Gala affair to be held at the Chartiers Country Club on Saturday, Sept. 19. Mass of Anticipation, which covers our Sunday obligation, will begin at 4 p.m. An open bar is available to our guests from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30. The evening will culminate with a brief award ceremony, entertainment and dancing until 11:30 p.m. The cost per person is $50.00.

Next Monday, June 22, the Ireland Institute will welcome 21 young people from Counties Donegal and Tyrone to Pittsburgh as they will participate in our 62nd Wider Horizons Program. As many of you know, these programs have proven invaluable, providing disadvantaged/unemployed young people with skills for work and for life back in Ireland.

We need someone to step forward to host ONE of our participants over the next eight weeks. This 19 year old Catholic boy will intern at a local community YMCA Mondays through Thursdays. He'll attend Duquesne U. every Friday with the rest of his group. And they will participate in various evening and weekend activities organized by their Irish supervisors, with help from the Institute.

Hosts are expected to provide a bedroom; meals (per the household schedule); and a friendly support system.

Hosts receive $135 per week toward the room and board of the participant.

This group will finish its Pittsburgh program on or around Friday, August 14.

was an English mathematician and philosopher. As the inventor of Boolean algebra, which is the basis of all modern computer arithmetic, Boole is regarded in hindsight as one of the founders of the field of computer science.

Dear Friends and Listeners to "Echoes of Erin,"

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Echoes of Erin is expanding.

Beginning June 7 the program will begin broadcasting at 12:30 p.m. and continue through 2 p.m. on WEDO-AM at 810 on the dial. The new version of the program is 30 longer.

And do remember, if you cannot tune in live, you can always listen a little later in the day at www.wedo810.com. Click on Program Guide, scroll down page, click on Echoes of Erin and download a program.

This is a big development for the program. After 21 years on WEDO, I think I’ll have plenty of material to share with you. At this point "The Ireland Report" will continue at 1:15 p.m. and "Dateline Irish" at about 1:50 p.m. Perhaps later I’ll adjust the times a bit, but for now they will remain the same.

Please pass this information on along. I look forward to your continuing support. As always, I am open to your input. If you want to hear something special, just ask, and I’ll do what I can. I would be most appreciative if you would pass this on and include in your newsletters and bulletins.

"Hunger," the Irish film depicting Bobby Sands' hunger strike in a Northen Ireland jail, concludes its engagement at the Harris Theater, Downtown, with performances at 7:30 p.m. June 2 and 3.

It will not be shown anywhere else in Western Pennsylvania.
